Indie dev shares cleaner woodcut art style for horror deckbuilder, seeks community feedback
Obscurium, a horror deckbuilder built on Brazilian folklore, has been in development with a unique woodcut art style — but its creator has been second-guessing this choice after suggestions to opt for a softer, more painted look.
To address concerns and show how the style looks in motion, the developer created a test video featuring cleaner lines and less of the raw carved texture, while keeping the overall scene the same: a candlelit table with the creature watching from the other side as players decide their moves.
The video specifically showcases the Espírito Afogado, or Drowned Spirit, card, with a glowing effect and a red skull sinking through a school of fish. Meanwhile, the playtest that went live features the original rougher card designs, allowing players to compare and experience both versions firsthand.
The developer is seeking feedback from the community, asking whether the cleaner version loses something essential or if it reads better, and is open to sharing the playtest link for those interested in comparing the two art styles directly.
It's worth noting that the art is not yet final, and significant changes are expected before the game's launch. The community's input, however, will be valuable in shaping the game's visual identity.
